How To Choose The Right Size Wall Art

We are often asked this question by our customers, " What size wall art is suitable for my room?" or " How large should I go to compliment the size of my furniture?”. If you are like the majority of us who are not interior designers and haven’t quite got the eye for this stuff you will need to know the ‘rules’ when it comes to selecting the right size Wall Art.

Not only is there sizing in a general sense but there are a couple other factors that need to be considered when it comes to selecting the correct size wall art for your wall space. For instance if you hang a print too small on a large wall it will give the appearance that the art is lost and if the print is too big it will look like it's trying to take over the room and it will look just as strange.

While there is no definitive answer as to exactly how big or small your piece should be, we do have some guidelines that should help you make the right decision!

The best way to do this is to break it down into the following three categories:

  • Size
  • Orientation
  • Placement

All these factors will determine whether your wall art choice is a flop or the very finishing touch you need to anchor your space. So let's just jump right into it shall we!

1. Size

If you are looking to hang your wall art on a blank open wall we suggest you aim to fill about two-thirds to three-fourths of your available wall space.

If you are looking to hang the piece above furniture such as a bed, couch or console table, and you are wanting your wall art to be the focal point of the room, do not select a piece of art that is wider than the width of the furniture. Generally speaking the art should be about 50-75% the width of the furniture.

Even though we recommend measuring your space prior to checkout, if you are unable to and are just too eager to purchase a piece, when in doubt its’ always safer to lean towards a slightly bigger size, rather than a smaller size.

As you can see in the images below choosing a print that is too small for your space can throw off the whole look, whereas a perfectly sized print shows that the selection was thought out and it actually compliments your furniture!

2. Orientation

You really need to consider the shape of your wall space, if your wall runs high and lets say you have a skinny space between two windows, then portrait will be best, where as if your wall wall runs wide, then a landscape (horizontal) piece will be the way to go to fill the space.

3. Placement

The placement of your wall art is crucial to achieving a balanced and visually pleasing space. We generally advise to have the centre point of the wall art hung to be generally at eye level. If you are sitting at the dining table the last thing you would want is to be straining your neck to look up. When having a piece of wall art hung above a bedhead or couch the distance between the bottom of the wall art and the top of the couch should be about 10-15cm.

A little handy hint: All our Wall Art comes in accurate sizes,  for framed artworks they are finished sizes with frame included. If you are looking at getting a set of 2 or 3 the sizes listed are per frame, not a combined measurement.
