I am very happy with the final painting; I would say it is my most successful cockatoo painting yet, and possibly my favourite of my own paintings.

These birds are commonly found in the northern part of Australia. They are very hard to capture, however, as they are smart enough to know that it is precarious to allow people too close. Indigenous people used to hunt them for the red tail feathers, which might be one reason why red-tailed blacks are so easily spooked by human proximity. They are also highly intelligent birds, often found eating nuts in farmers' orchards. One can only presume that farmers have their ways of removing the birds from their properties.

These birds are a male and a female, perched in a Corymbia species of tree, known as a bloodwood.

Size: 89cm (W) x 69cm (H)

Medium: Acrylic on canvas

Framed with a contemporary wooden frame, as pictured
