Fiona Hill Original Artwork

For Fiona Hill, art has been a lifelong companion. Moving frequently, she began school in Malaysia, went to schools in Australia, and completed her education in Indonesia.

No matter where she found herself, the visual arts classroom was always a place of familiarity and inspiration. From an early age, she filled sketchbooks with imagined worlds, discovering in art a sense of freedom, curiosity and endless creative possibility.

Today, Fiona's practice continues to be guided by that same spirit of exploration. Her style has evolved from abstract figurative painting towards expressive abstraction, with a particular fascination for cloudscapes and abstract landscapes. Working intuitively, she builds each painting through layered applications of acrylic paint, often incorporating mixed media and oils in smaller works. Music frequently accompanies her time in the studio, influencing the rhythm of her mark-making and allowing each artwork to unfold naturally.

Inspired by the Post-Impressionist masters, including Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Fiona is drawn to their expressive use of colour, brushwork and their ability to communicate emotion rather than simply depict reality. This philosophy continues to shape her own work, where shifting textures, colours and gestures reflect both the physical and emotional landscapes that inspire her.

Whether using brushes, palette knives or even her hands, Fiona embraces a highly intuitive creative process. Each painting develops through a series of unique, nuanced layers that reveal traces of emotion, memory and connection, inviting viewers to discover something new with every encounter.

Through her work, Fiona hopes to create moments of calm and contemplation. Her paintings offer a gentle escape from the pace of everyday life, encouraging viewers to pause, reflect and find their own meaning, whether in the suggestion of a colourful sky, an abstract landscape or an emotional expression. Collected throughout Australia and internationally, her work brings warmth, depth and tranquillity to the spaces it inhabits.
