Monet

One of the key founders of the Impressionist art movement, Claude Monet was born in Paris in 1840 and went on to become one of the most well-known, celebrated, and influential landscape artists of all time.

He was the leader of the Impressionist group, which included Renoir and Sisley, and together they organised the first ever Impressionist exhibit – whose name was inspired by one of Monet’s pieces – Impression Sunrise.

It was during his time in Giverny, France, where the world around him inspired Monet to create some of his most well-known pieces – the Waterlilies series. He was so inspired by the world and gardens around him, he couldn’t help but paint them at different times of the day to capture the softening and differing effects light and colour had on the world.
